What Shopify Catalog needs from a product
Shopify Catalog is Shopify's own list of products from Shopify shops, which it shares with AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT and Copilot. This is what Shopify publishes that a shop and each product need, in the order you can check them.
| What | What Shopify asks for |
|---|---|
| Your plan | Shopify Catalog includes stores on the Starter plan or higher, so a development store's products are left out. |
| Store access | The online store is not password-protected. Products from a password-protected store are left out. |
| Product status | The product is Active. Draft and Archived products are not for sale; Unlisted hides the product from search and AI shopping channels. |
| Sales channel | The product is published to the Online Store, Headless or Hydrogen sales channel. |
| Search engines | The product's 'hide from search engines' setting is off. |
| Title | The product has a title. |
| Image | The product has at least one image. |
| Price | At least one variant has a price above zero. |
| Web address | The product has a web address (a handle, so it has a page on your store). |
| Store policies | For selling through ChatGPT, the shop has a refund policy, a privacy policy and terms of service set in Shopify. |
Draft and Archived products are not for sale, so being left out is expected for them. The rules above are the same ones GAIP's Shopify app will use to name the likely cause when a product goes missing.
Details that help assistants match your products
Beyond the rules, keep the details shoppers and assistants compare accurate and the same everywhere: the price, whether it is in stock, product codes such as SKU and barcode, and the product category. Shopify's page on products in agentic storefronts, linked below, explains how products appear there. When your Shopify admin and your shop's own product page disagree, a shopper or an assistant may see different facts in different places.
